Madrona Marsh Wetlands

Back to California Wetlands page

Madrona Marsh Preserve is an enclosed seasonal wetlands comprised of 43 acres in the city of Torrance. It is situated on land that was meant for oil production in the 1920s, but it was never developed. The city grew up around it leaving an oasis and natural habitat for many birds, reptiles and other small animals.

Madrona Marsh is a vernal (Spring) marsh. There is no specific water source like other wetlands that are fed by streams or rivers, instead the marsh is located at the lowest point in the area and the higher slopes shed their winter storm waters into the marsh as a temporary collection pool, providing a habitat for a variety of plants and animals.
