About the Prints

About My Process

Print making and photo printing has been around a very long time. However with the advent of digital technology much of the craft and skill involved has shifted to file preparation as opposed to the actual printing which is now done primarily on digital ink jet printers or in the case of metallic prints, a color dye sublimation printer.

The advantage of these printers is the ability to reproduce consistent results and thus ensure the consistency that a limited edition requires.

The excellence of the paper and inks, as well as a calibrated printer and finely tuned color profile are all required for a high level of quality reproduction. I work with Eric Joseph, a leading expert in digital print making, at Freestyle Photo to maintain this level of quality.

Preparation of the digital file that will be used is where the process begins.

I have been working with digital photo files since 1990. Although digital cameras were not yet capable of any kind of quality digital capture, I was scanning traditional slides and negatives to work with in Photoshop and other programs. I worked as a photo illustrator, retoucher and photographer for many New York City Advertising agencies where I learned the craft and the skill necessary for the highest quality photo reproduction.

It is this experience I bring to my work today to ensure that the images I print for clients and myself are always of the highest quality.

All images are captured on high-end professional digital cameras, or film cameras for some older work, and are then taken through a meticulous and comprehensive workflow that results in a digital file that is ready for printing. All files are scrutinized for sharpness and clarity and no image will be offered or available in print sizes that I feel may result in any loss of quality or clarity.

Editions

Some prints in my galleries are offered in Limited Editions, but I don’t think an edition should be limited by print size. So in order to accommodate every buyer, each edition is available in any number of sizes, BUT, once the total number of prints in that edition has been made, no matter what size, that edition will be over.

This also ensures that in the future, buyers need not worry that new additional editions of different sizes will be offered.

I will sign off on every print I offer for sale on the back of the print.

WAtermarks

You may notice my logo and copyright in the lower-left corner of the images on my site, these will NEVER appear on a print, they are there simply as a protective measure for this site. Unfortunately (or fortunately) my work is popular enough that many people are constantly using my images without permission, the watermark is another layer of copyright protection I have at my disposal.

Prices

I do not post prices. Prices are determined by print size and paper or substrate type. As an Edition starts to sell out, prices may increase as well. Please contact me if you are interested or have questions about a specific print. Please use the print title which is visible below each image on the gallery page. Contact me.

Sizes

My preferred print paper size is 22" x 17" with the image size 18"-21" on the long side. I will usually personally print these myself, using Canson’s Platine Fiber Rag, a brilliant satin finish paper yielding both luxurious colors and brilliant B&W tonality. The smallest print I will make is 11" x 17", the only exceptions are photos in the Mindful of Photos gallery, I will print these as 8'“ x 10” and larger.

Larger sizes are available, but no image will be offered or available in a print size that I feel may result in any loss of quality or clarity. Large prints may not be suitable for traditional framing because of potential warping, in those cases I recommend face-mounting to Acrylic. More information about that here.

Other paper or surfaces

If there is any particular paper or substrate you are interested in, please contact me to discuss. More information about that here.

Large acrylic prints can come with a black metal flush frame
